This Wednesday I was down in D.C. vigorously vetting Obama’s new treasury secretary, Jack Lew. I wasn’t particularly keen on the choice, but ultimately came to the decision that his pedigree(he’s a Queens native) trumped his acumen and policies. Afterwards we all headed to the White House for an intimate dinner, where in between the cheese course and the port n cigars I stole a quick moment to check my emails. Much to my surprise, and dismay, came numerous urgent missives about a crane crashing down on Center Boulevard. I quickly told the prez and sec’y that I had urgent business to attend to and would have to take a raincheck on the Clinton era Cohibas, at which point I stepped out to the Rose Garden in order to post the news on LICtalk. Alas, it was too late, as nearly every major news site from Albuquerque to Yokohama was crawling over Hunters Point. I was not going to let the disappointment of not beating the mainstream media to a story right in my backyard by a few hours bother me too much. Not when I have been ahead of the curve on local news and trends by days, weeks, months, and eventually even years. Yet as I walked around LIC the next day, I noticed not only lots of other guys walking around with very long lenses and badges, but also other local nuances that I may have missed before, such as a new real estate brokerage named Dream Property Group that opened up in the ground floor space next to Bella Via on 48th Avenue. Or a great review in the New York Times last week about a play running at the Chocolate Factory. All this got me thinking, or at least was a reminder, to get the word out to you dear readers, to please pass on any Long Island City info that you come across that might be deemed newsworthy to:
editor@lictalk.com
One piece of news that I did receive at the email above, is about a meeting for the Friends of Hunters Point Library. The details are below the links, but as a reminder keep in mind that there is also a community meeting that very same night to address several other local issues, as posted here at 7pm. Wow, that’s like a doubleheader of civilian duty, you’ll deserve a nitecap at the the LIC Bar after all that. Maybe a little port n cigars?
