Local news has taken a backseat worldwide during the pandemic, as the mundanity of everyday life seems trivial.. Being locked down doesn’t help on that front. Restaurant news has been even more scarce: few new restaurants are opening, buildouts have halted, and reviews are basically on lockdown too. So I understand the need for food writers (and sports and travel writers too) to stretch to create content.

Dutch Kills Centraal is permanently closing according to the owners. The restaurant, located on a quiet corner three blocks north of Queens Plaza, originally opened in 2013 when the immediate neighborhood was close to a dead zone, especially come nightfall. In the ensuing years numerous hotels and a few residential towers have sprung up.

The protests are winding down and now the real work begins, both in terms of reforms and making a living. Yet even if you’re no longer WFH, Summer 2020 increasingly has the feeling of staying at home, or staying close by. You can see that in the crowds along Vernon Blvd and in Gantry Park, and as people flock to the outdoors, a whole passel of new al fresco food options has gravitated to the LIC waterfront.
