Tomorrow is the first day of school for NYC public school students. After putting in a solid three days, those kids will then get a 4-day weekend due to Rosh Hashanah. Then it’s back to the grindstone for three days, only to have yet another 3-day school week in week three of the school year due to Yom Kippur and the newly added Eid Al Adha.
Back when I went to school, all these holidays would have been a blessing. Not because of their significance, but due the work and school mantra: a bad day on the golf course (or playground), is better than…

In light of the local LIC school hubbub, focused around the almost sure death of the PS78 middle school, there have been a lot of suggestions going around on a large email chain as to how to secure more capacity/another school, and possibly stave off the elimination.

LIC is getting a new bikeway thanks to it’s winning an allocation of $500,000 from the participatory budgeting process. Didn’t know this was such a great need, but maybe you can discern more from the blurb advocating it on the ballot:
Long Island City Bikeway – elements of a bike path exist already, an improved safe and reliable bike way system would increase the level of bike use, reduce cars using path for parking and enhance the neighborhood.
