As everyone in Long Island City knows, July 4th weekend officially begins with the delivery of Porta Potties to Gantry Park – because how can you have fireworks without Porta Potties? They have arrived, so everyone but The Editor is now free to leave work.
Not that it’s really kept many from already departing, as LIC began getting quiet yesterday. A trend that will continue throughout the weekend until it becomes downright eerie and Scooby-Doo-ville by Monday morning as all the cars are removed from the streets.
Then a crescendo begins to build in the afternoon, reaching its climax at 9pm July 4th evening. If you want an idea of exactly what to expect on that day, here is last years coverage and pics.
//New Ice Cream Shop on Vernon is called ‘Something Sweet’ and will open next week – the awning is up and the name of the new ice cream shop on Vernon that we revealed back in May is called ‘Something Sweet.’ According to the owner, Nicole Li, they were hoping to have a soft opening this weekend, but next week looks more likely. Nicole owns a similarly named shop in Staten Island, and other than the look, most of the offerings will be the same. These include homemade ice cream, cakes/cupcakes/baked Asian desserts, Bubble Tea’s, and Thai ice cream rolls. Bubble Tea has been a trendy option across New York for awhile, but this will be the first place in LIC that offers it. Thai Ice Cream rolls are very new to the NYC culinary dessert scene according to Zagat.
In addition, several of the ice cream flavors might seem unfamiliar to many westerners, such as corn, red bean, and taro. Also differing from convention, all the ice cream will contain less sugar and more real ingredients like fruit (where applicable), and thus be less sweet.
