NUMEROUS analogies have been made between the investigative reporting of Woodward & Bernstein and LICtalk. Though these two sets of highly regarded journalists cover different subject matter and separate era’s, the disclosures they have all uncovered are equally monumental. In their own way. Furthermore, many have also noted that there is striking resemblance between The Editor and Woodward …as portrayed in the movie.
Nevertheless the analogy for which I am most honored, so humbly, is to that of William Shakespeare, for the chronicling of every day life here in the shadow of the big city. Timeless, so timeless.
Leading me to tremendous introspection as to why I cannot come up with the words to weave together this weeks motley headlines. To a story about landlords slashing rents in Greenpoint, I can only refer ye to my writings of only a fortnight past, where I boldly predicted “local rents may be ready to topple from their lofty perch.” Boldly yet humbly, so humbly. May I add George Soros to the analogies?1
“LIC is the fastest growing Asian community in all of NYC and Asian residents now make up more than a third of LIC’s population” declares a recent article. Interesting data point but I can’t say it comes as a complete revelation given our ‘Asia LIC’ ink in the past couple of years.
The Ravenswood Generating Station on Vernon Boulevard snaps its fingers and all of a sudden converts from burning natural gas to using wind power. Well not with a finger-snap, more like a press release/photo op where there seemingly is no downside and which even includes “saving ratepayers money.” Call me skeptical, but like three-card Monte it all seems too easy. Mining waste anyone? Anyway I’m going to continue to do my part by taking cold showers.
With the humorous portion above concluded, a reminder of tragedy comes in the final headline. Whereby a 19-year old youth is sentenced to 20 years in jail for the shooting death of a 53-year old history teacher walking his dog on 40th Avenue one July morning in 2020. To which this bard can only pen ‘Meanwhile up in Queensbridge…‘
