The answer: Oktoberfest! On the heels of my last posting about Queens, my urging to all to get out and explore the rest of our borough, the onset of fall, and my love of beer gardens, comes a great article in “Edible Queens” all about Zumm Stammtisch in Glendale. Before I delve into it, first let me say that I am a big fan of this magazine, as it does an excellent job of capturing the diversity and zeitgeist of all the culinary offerings available in Queens, replete with beautiful photos. It is a free publication, available at Food Cellar amongst other locations, so check it out. Zumm Stammtisch is a German restaurant in Glendale that has been around since 1979. Where is Glendale? Well the only one that I previously knew about was in Southern California, right next to Pasadena. I know that because it annually entered a float in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, until 2011 when the city ran out of money. Now, thanks to the article, I find out there is a Glendale right near us in LIC. Well, not exactly right near us, this is one of those places in Queens that you have to go into Brooklyn first before you can go back to Queens, but it is actually pretty easy to get to, unlike say the Rockaways. No, there is no Rose Parade in this Glendale, but there is an old school German restaurant that serves Hofbrau on tap and Jagerschnitzel, all in a uniquely Queens environment! Altogether now “Prost!”

September 18, 2012 at 1:55 pmExcellent timing – Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. Radegast Beer Hall in Williamsburg is also a great place to go that is near by.
