LUNCH lines in Midtown fast-casual dining hot spots are starting to get lengthy again despite repeated stories of the office mecca’s inability to turn the corner occupancy-wise. The extraordinarily easy access to midtown is a large selling point for LIC apartments, because time is money and by the transitive property vested in me I do declare: commute = time = $ which = higher home and rental prices, Ka-Ching!

WE are only one week into Fall and the two NYC pro football teams are a combined 0-6. Thus I have already made my easy-to-get fine dining reservation during Superbowl. While the rest of the nation gobbles and guzzles chicken wings, cheesesteaks and beer in front of 100″ screens, I will be ingesting and digesting salty sea creatures nestled in rice and seaweed and washing them down with a fermented rice drink called sake, all within the soothing confines of a wood-paneled chamber replete with trickling zen fountain where nary more than a whisper will be heard.

SCHOOL started last week and it’s always interesting here in LIC to see who has remained and who has departed over the summer. This year’s decampment is especially noteworthy given the pandemic and how it may have altered attitudes, as well as the lengthy gap since school was attended regularly.

Meju (메주) is a brick of dried fermented soybeans. While not consumed on its own, it serves as the basis of several Korean condiments, such as doenjang (soybean paste), ganjang (soy sauce), and gochujang (chili paste).
A new Korean market and restaurant called Little Banchan Shop and Meju respectively are coming to 5-28 49th Avenue in Hunters Point, formerly the home of Mini Play Land. It will be helmed by Hooni Kim and his wife Catharine.
