This morning Bisnow held their annual Long Island City/Queens Real Estate Event. No revelations were shared and most of the banter was just such, which this late in the economic cycle is not surprising. So we will use it as a jumping off point in regards to a trend in regards to Long Island City real estate that’s been occurring for a few years but has yet to be publicized.

THE critic has spoken and in so doing is probably just the start of what I expect to be a cavalcade of accolades for the Hunters Point Library. Now that it’s been completed, might its opening be the final piece that puts the LIC waterfront on the global stage? We already have the iconic instagrammable Pepsi Sign, the Gantries, and of course the in-your-face views of Manhattan. Throw in a pair of ferry stops, MoMA PS1 and the intrigue fomented by Amazon and its rejection, and the library opening and subsequent frenzy becomes the pièce de résistance for hordes of tourists.
A new cafe is opening at 5-43 48th Avenue, the former nook of Greenpoint Fish n Lobster according to The Court Square Blog. ‘Little Chef Little Cafe’ will serve coffee and espresso drinks, tea, smoothies, bowls (acai bowls), salads, and offer prepared meal prep available for purchase. The owner is Diana Manalang whose existing business, Little Chef Little Kitchen, has been around for a bit over a year now providing meal prep, catering, and private chef services to local residents. That fried chicken sandwich you see in the picture was cooked by Chef Jimmy Thomas. It uses the same chicken recipe that has been passed down from his family for years while adding his own gourmet spin: an aged pineapple mango hot sauce and aioli made from scratch.

LIKE any good journalist I maintain a list of possible story ideas for future use. Every so often someone else comes along and publishes one of those ideas, at which point I make an assessment – was it done well or is there more to say at some point in the future? In the former category is a story out this week in The Irish Echo about the Guinness brewery that used to be in Long Island City. It was located at 28th St. and 47th Avenue on the eastern side of Sunnyside Yards, and was in production from 1949 to 1954. As anyone who’s been to Ireland knows, the thought behind it brewing fresh Guinness versus having it shipped was a good one. Alas, the American public was not quite ready for the taste of stout. Fast forward to today and this once industrial factory/warehouse was recently repositioned into a new loft-like office building called The Mill.
