Long Island City taxi depot — Where have all the taxis gone?

Down on Borden Avenue and 21st Street there’s a pedestrian bridge followed by an underpass that was created to go over the LIRR tracks and under the LIE. To put it benignly the resulting corridor is kinda spooky during the day and downright menacing at night, especially the latter portion. Not that I’m aware of anything bad transpiring there, but it’s not a friendly trek for those taking it regularly to get to the Hunters Point subway & LIRR stations from the various businesses on Borden. Most LIC residents are probably not even aware of this backdoor passageway or the surrounding blocks, as they’re in an obscure corner not heavily trafficked, kind of hiding in plain site.

Chef Jimmy’s Vicious Creole Cycle in LIC This Weekend

That fried chicken sandwich you see in the picture was cooked by Chef Jimmy Thomas. It uses the same chicken recipe that has been passed down from his family for years while adding his own gourmet spin: an aged pineapple mango hot sauce and aioli made from scratch.

LIKE any good journalist I maintain a list of possible story ideas for future use. Every so often someone else comes along and publishes one of those ideas, at which point I make an assessment – was it done well or is there more to say at some point in the future? In the former category is a story out this week in The Irish Echo about the Guinness brewery that used to be in Long Island City. It was located at 28th St. and 47th Avenue on the eastern side of Sunnyside Yards, and was in production from 1949 to 1954. As anyone who’s been to Ireland knows, the thought behind it brewing fresh Guinness versus having it shipped was a good one. Alas, the American public was not quite ready for the taste of stout. Fast forward to today and this once industrial factory/warehouse was recently repositioned into a new loft-like office building called The Mill. Long Island City Fall Highlights 2019

King of Falafel — This girl has a very tough choice to make, falafel or shawarma?

AHH Fall, its onset brings both excitement and sadness over summer’s end as I sit here typing away on Labor Day.

Ohh yes, those highlights. The opening of the Hunters Point Library on September 24 is the most significant and transformational event. In the meantime we have tennis occurring right now at the U.S. Open in Queens – and for those parents who may want their child to be the next Verena or Rogael there’s plenty of time to squeeze in a few lessons with The Tennis Whisperer of Long Island City. Football too as I peruse the college scores from the opening weekend and anticipate the start of the NFL this weekend, we also have a local team, Long Island City High School, that has a chance to be at the top of heap. For a week anyway, as they take on the Mighty Number Crunchers of Stuyvesant HS at noon Saturday on their home turf. Oktoberfest, which a large portion of actually occurs in September – no specific relevance to LIC, but I’m sure all the local breweries will provide one. And while summer (vacation) has departed, a new food cart has arrived on Vernon Boulevard: King of Falafel (and Shawarma)!!! This 2010 Vendy Award winner will be on the western side of the street between 48th Avenue and 49th Rd (aka 40 feet from Vernon Grille) every Monday-Friday evening. As-Salaam Alaikum.
