And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
Back in my early teens I was a fireworks fanatic. Bottle rockets, cherry bombs, bricks of firecrackers, roman candles, etc. gave me great joy. It also made me and my compadres the scourge of the suburban street I grew up on, which was largely inhabited by retirees for some reason – whose fanaticism centered around gardening. So it is with great reluctance, mainly as a result of my unwillingness to concede to adulthood, that I write this post.[Read more…] about Fireworks And Other Disturbances On The LIC Waterfront
Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, London, LA, Long Island City – an incongruous lot to say the least, what do they all have in common? As of today they all have a ‘Four Winters Ice Cream’ location. Paris, Tokyo, Manhattan, and ahem Brooklyn do not. Just a chooglin’ on down to New Orleans
IT wasn’t the wind and rain that made Hurricane Sandy so destructive to LIC and NYC, but the unusual surge of the coastal waters, which in our case meant the East River. In a small redux, we got a taste of that yesterday around 11am in Gantry Park per the photo above. Unlike Sandy, this flooding occurred when the moon phase was not full, which traditionally causes higher tides. Not to be alarmist, but you may want to get the rafts ready, or at least the skim boards.
