15 Candidates Have Filed To Run For JVB’s Seat

“ACCORDING to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, 15 candidates have filed so far to run for term-limited City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer’s (D-Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City, Astoria, Dutch Kills) seat in 2021.”

Wow that’s some field, the only thing missing is a celebrity. What has spurred this civic call to action for a relatively minor position, the chance to make an impact? The seat does enjoy some considerable local oversight as well as fund dispersal, but with 51 city council members not much sway outside of one’s district. There’s a bit of prestige, more so here in District 26 than other locations, particularly Manhattan. A touch of hobnobbing, shoulder-rubbing, political clout, and a possible jumping off point for higher office. Oh, and the salary was upped to $148k from $112k a year back in 2016, that’s probably an added incentive for some of the candidates. It also comes with government benefits and a discretionary office budget. All-in-all not a bad gig.

Languorous Long Island City Summer Ends With A Bang

WOW, what an end to the week summer. Two big pieces of news for Long Island City occurred within the last 24 hours, after a six-month local news cycle usurped by city, national and worldwide headlines. First, a young man was shot and killed one block from Center Boulevard in Hunters Point early yesterday evening. While this news is startling and seemingly an abrupt punctuation mark on a crazy summer both near and far, I’m not quickly tempted to extrapolate the nightly shenanigans in the park to it. One look at the picture1 of the young man lying on Borden Avenue being aided by a police officer and knowing now that he’s in his last minutes of his life is much graver than what we’ve been dealing with.2 I still believe the parks will calm down after the summer is over and that this is a one-off incident much like the occasional shootings that intrude on the Upper East Side or Tribeca. I hope.

Waterfront Master Plan Revealed, It’s Not So Masterful

Smorgasburg comes to Center Blvd

The Waterfront Master Plan was unveiled by the developers last week at a Community Board meeting according to the LIC Post. The details are a little hazy, but big picture they are asking to build up to 12 million square feet comprised of 30 to 60 story towers and a 50/50 split between commercial and residential usage.

In return for this request the developers have offered space for three schools and half a million square feet for arts and culture and similar uses. The proposal will also use a quarter of the total 28 acres for open space and include a pedestrian/bike bridge over Anable Basin at 5th Street.

1-Million Square Foot Office Tower To Be Part Of LIC Waterfront Plan

How about a lil office tower on the crick Elon?

A one million square foot office tower will be part of the LIC Waterfront Master Plan according to Tom Elghanayan, the co-founder of TF Cornerstone. This is the first salient detail revealed about what the developers are contemplating for the 28-acre assemblage, and is an indication they are open to compiling a whole new playbook for the area. I say contemplating because they are still in the process of gathering community input prior to putting forth their initial proposal.
