LIC’s 2014 Spring battle over the use of restaurant’s backyards, has gotten citywide attention now that summer is here. Yesterday, The Daily News published an article highlighting Alobar’s and 51st Bakery & Cafe rejections so far of their use. Adding fuel to the fire, the story disclosed that:
“The Buildings Department approved plans at 51st Bakery and Café and then backpedaled after receiving an anonymous complaint saying the business did not have a proper certificate of occupancy to open the garden.”
Hmm, the timing sounds a little fishy to me, might it be an inside job?
Anyway, while Community Board 2 is still in its exploratory phase regarding the use of restaurant’s backyards1, there are a few new options for dining al fresco this summer. M. Wells Steakhouse now has a terrace, and the Dinette in MoMA PS1 has just added a rooftop bar to the museum that has views of the city (and LIC). Also, I noticed that the Corner Bistro now offers street side dining. For those looking to picnic, Murray Park has finally taken down the scaffolding on the eastern half, and it reveals lots of new dining tables, plus a big grass circle. Finally, as we mentioned last week, under stealth of the Parks Department, Live at the Gantries has begun. It starts at 7pm every Tuesday night, so have your personal chef pack a few cold poached lobsters, crack open a bottle of pouilly fuisse, and get down to the smooth R&B of Nostalgic as the sun sets over Manhattan.
