A balmy mid-December combined with a surge in Covid makes for a very strange holiday season. All the planning from last week could be off by next week, yet here we are.

Borden Avenue Murder Suspect Arrested
THOUGH relegated to the back pages of the citywide papers, the big news here in LIC was the announcement of an arrest in the shooting death of a 25-year old man on Borden Avenue in early September 2020.

“Nothing happens. Nobody comes, nobody goes. It’s awful.”
Samuel Beckett, Waiting For Godot
IN between breaking news about restaurant opening’s and musing on the direction of local real estate markets, it’s not unusual that I include a link to a violent crime that recently occurred with the comment “meanwhile up in Queensbridge” if that’s where it took place.
The flippancy of this comment has nothing to do with the lack of gravity over the act, and everything to do with the exasperation of it’s recurrence and inability to change this state of affairs. In reading the headline about the shooting death of a 37-year old man several weeks ago, I was about to cut and paste the link and my usual comment once again1, but the frequency has increased to a level of desperation. The fact is that nothing short of a major overhaul will curtail this violence.

Bierocracy Closing, Lupo Rosso Pizzeria Opening, & Asia LIC
THE New York Times has declared Long Island City is now ‘Little Asia,’ or maybe it’s ‘Asiatown?’ Well they didn’t really declare it, but they might as well have given a prominent story they published this week noting the exploding Asian population in LIC.
You can read it if you want, but given the article’s strong focus on all the new Asian eateries that have popped up recently in the neighborhood it should come as no surprise to readers of LICtalk. Every third week it seems we break the story of a new Asian food-related business opening locally, and have noted the regional trend in cuisine. You could say we pointed the way!
//Bierocracy is closing. According to their website it has to do with their landlord. In the meantime all drinks are 50% off until their last hurrah this Sunday, October 24.
//Lupo Rosso Pizzeria is coming to 43-67 11th Street next to ICONYC Brewing Company. Lupo is wolf, rosso is red, and pizzeria… well that’s all I know about this place, but looks close to opening.

Revisiting The Recent News On Long Island City
SCHOOL started last week and it’s always interesting here in LIC to see who has remained and who has departed over the summer. This year’s decampment is especially noteworthy given the pandemic and how it may have altered attitudes, as well as the lengthy gap since school was attended regularly.
