A 20-something year old man was shot and killed this evening around 7pm on Borden Avenue and 2nd Street, one block from the Oval on Center Boulevard.

IN case you haven’t heard on social media, there’s a continued uproar over the late night shenanigans in the waterfront parks. While the fireworks have faded out, loud vehicles and music, vandalism, and large parties have not, and seemingly little has been done by authorities to stop them. In light of this a group of residents took it upon themselves to raise money for private security to patrol the two parks at night, which subsequently lead to a backlash from other citizens about access, accusations, acceptance, etc., leading to elected officials jumping in on both sides.

Here we are the end of August. It’s still hot, languorous, and quiet in LIC and about a week away from our thoughts turning to Fall and school, aka the future. And yet a select group still in town are struggling and barely keeping their heads above water, despite working long hours primarily in the heat of the sun. I’m talking about the restaurant owners, which by appearances may seem to be doing quite well were one to simply observe the bustling outside activity. But for most owners the outdoor seating is a wash at best, as the capacity is still a fraction of what most restaurants hold. Plus the extreme heat coupled with occasional rain is a financial widowmaker. It pains me to walk by a restaurant on a rainy day knowing that it leads to a flood of cash down the drain with zero recoupment. John Brown Smokehouse is closing it’s original location on 44th Drive after eight years and rolling it up into it’s Mothership Meat Company restaurant in Dutch Kills according to the LIC Post and the company’s Facebook page.
The owner Josh Bowen cited 1. his lease ending 2. the uncertainty around Covid-19 and 3. the difficulty of operating on 44th Drive, stating that the latter was a “ghost town” and that “nothing will ever flourish there for decades.” As for the last point he went on to deride the “idiot local politicians” apparently in reference to the Amazon HQ2 debacle, which he was very vocal about.
