E&I DELI RE-OPENS WITH A NU LOOK

The 21st century prototypical bodega

'Lemme get a chopped cheese and onion rings'

‘Lemme get a chopped cheese, onion rings, and extra ketchup’

EVERY morning I awake at the crack of noon to the worry of whether I will find something truly newsworthy to share with the well read citizens of LIC.  Frequently, like many renowned writers, I am forced to conjure something out of an idea: Melville had his whale, Hemingway a marlin, and Benchley a shark.  For The Editor it is a butterfly.

Because today the news gods are smiling on me, as I am happy to announce that E&I Deli on Vernon Boulevard has cast off its chrysalis and metamorphosed Continue reading

MASSO RESTAURANT ON VERNON HAS CLOSED & IS FOR SALE

Big changes off Vernon too - look, we have a Technion!

Big changes off Vernon too – look, we have a Technion!

Thank goodness for retail store turnover, otherwise there would be zero local news of significance1.  Anyway, Masso Restaurant which has occupied a prime corner location on Vernon Blvd and 47th Rd. since 2005, seemed to have closed when I passed it recently.

After some considerable sleuthing I discovered that the restaurant is also Continue reading

After being vacant for six years, a not-so-new tenant comes along

HUNTERS Point Dental will be moving to new and bigger offices at the base of One Vernon Jackson.  This prime new location, on Vernon Boulevard just south of Cafe Henri, has been vacant since the building’s construction in 2010.  Moreover, HP Dental’s previous home three storefronts north of Dorian’s Diner (49-13 Vernon Boulevard), will now be open to a new tenant for the first time in 32 years! SNOWDAY, SHIA LABOEUF SHUT DOWN, L’INIZIO TURNED DOWN

Fresh powder yes, but don't eat the yellow snow

Fresh powder yes, but don’t eat the yellow snow

Snowday!  Is over – back to school/work.  ‘He Will Not Divide Us’ at the Museum of Moving Image is shut down due to violence.  L’Inizio Pizzeria on Vernon Boulevard is denied a license for back yard drinking according to the LIC Post.  The first two I don’t have anything to add, the latter is really disappointing.  According to the Post, the license was turned down because the owner, Tom Blaze, is accused by a Continue reading

GREEK RESTAURANT COMING INTO SAN REMO PIZZA LOCATION

Where have all the condos gone?

Where have all the condos gone?

WE have received a tip from a reader that a Greek restaurant is coming into the San Remo Pizza location on Vernon Boulevard.  The source said she popped into the space out of curiosity because the door was opened during construction, and happened into the owner, a “lovely Greek man,” who shared this information.  Continue reading

JESSICA LANG STUDIO A NO-GO, CRABHOUSE TIP

Less bull, more buffalo in 2017

Less bull, more buffalo in 2017

THIS news is about two months old for any parent who signed up for a class, as for the rest of us it’s brand new: the Jessica Lang Dance Center that was supposed to open in LIC earlier this year, has been scrapped for it’s original location.  Per a note sent to parents on November 4:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have withdrawn our plans to locate at 5-39 46 th Avenue. We remain committed to our mission of opening the Jessica Lang Dance Center in Long Island City and hope to announce plans for an alternative site in the future”

Looks like all the hopeful ballerina’s, fly-girls, and other hoofers will have to find a new avocation …or location in 2017.

//CORRECTION and Update – we received a number of inbound missives Continue reading

Roadhouse for the LIC Bar?

Roadhouse for the LIC Bar?

Commerce never sleeps, and despite it being the holiday season there is no respite from change along Vernon Boulevard.  Four addresses along the heavily trafficked southern portion have seen new activity during the latter half of December.

First of all, the Butcher Deli installed a new facade, indicating that the Continue reading

REVEALING THE NEW FACE OF LONG ISLAND CITY

img_2191

A whole new ball game

A whole new ball game

Big changes have come to LIC.  First, the long-vacant red-brick building on 48th Avenue between 5th Street and Vernon Boulevard lost it’s scaffolding and revealed it’s new facade.  In addition to modern windows and a sandblasted exterior, construction has resumed and new floors are being added.  3 1/2 years ago we shared a rumor that this was going to be a hotel with a steakhouse.  One new president later and I’m thinking condos.

Secondly, the two-story industrial building on the northwest corner of Continue reading

CITY ANNOUNCES BQX STREETCAR ROUTES IN LIC, NEW BRIDGE?

Likewise, LIC might get a lot closer for Greenpoint

Likewise, LIC might get a lot closer for Greenpoint too

CITY officials unveiled potential streetcar routes for the proposed BQX connector in a presentation yesterday.  Long Island City options include 21st Street into Jackson Avenue, 11th Street, or Vernon Boulevard.  All the plusses and minuses are laid out in the presentation.

Of possibly greater significance, and a key factor in determining which of the routes they choose, are the three bridge options for crossing into Brooklyn.  The first one, is to use the existing Pulaski.  Yet not only would the use of the bridge itself be logistically difficult given the newly carved out bike lane, but the study notes that the intersection leading up to it on the Queens side would be challenging.

That would leave the remaining two options as more plausible: either a new bridge crossing over at Vernon Boulevard, or a new bridge crossing over at 2nd Street and running east/west for two blocks across 51st Avenue.  Both of these would mean massive changes for Hunters Point.

Though my gut tells me there would be more positives than negatives with a second bridge1, it also very much confirms my initial reaction to the BQX Connector when it was first proposed back in February: Continue reading

  1. Negatives: lots of disruption during the lengthy construction process, more traffic/noise when it’s up and running, a serious change in lifestyle for 51st Ave residents.  Positives: a very convenient transit alternative for the immediate hood and greater and quicker connectivity to Greenpoint/Wmsbg including via bike/walking []

RARE TOWNHOUSE UP FOR SALE ON ICONIC 45TH AVENUE IN LIC

Oooh, scary line!

Oooh, scary line!

IT doesn’t happen often, but there is a new listing for a townhouse in the landmarked section of 45th Avenue between 21st and 23rd Streets.  It’s got 2,800 square feet over 5 stories, and has a backyard.  It’s currently split into a pair of 2-bedroom residences, but come on, I wouldn’t be touting a beauty like this if it couldn’t be easily combined into one grand home.

In addition to great bones and a historic block, this townhouse also has the essential three L’s of real estate investing as it resides in the Murray Park District (MPD) and is half a block from the park and 2-4 blocks from multiple subway lines that are a quick shuttle into Midtown.

The asking price is Continue reading
