ANYONE who’s walked to the Vernon/Jackson subway station during work hours this week could not have missed the renewed construction on the empty lot on 50th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard. In addition to a new fence, there was briefly a freshly printed permit and rendering with an expected completion date of Fall 2025. Will this come to pass? Who knows?!? Why was it delayed all these years and suddenly sprung to life? Ahh, if these walls could talk, but I don’t think it had anything to do with political prodding. Will Hunters Point get a new Starbucks, other national chain, or a ‘homegrown’ purveyor? Yah Mon, I already told you I do not know. But progress…

IN yet another sign that things are getting back to normal, ‘Live At The Gantries’ musical performances have returned to LIC this summer. Every Tuesday at 7pm thru August 24 a different band and a different genre will take the stage under the Gantries by 49th Avenue and Center Boulevard. By my estimation two-thirds of the bands are really good, one-third so-so and one-third awesome. Like I said, that’s an estimate, no guarantees, but the price is right and the setting perfect.

There are many signs this week of summer’s imminent arrival in LIC. The PS78Q Spring Fair on Center Boulevard is this Saturday, as is the 3rd Annual LIC Hoops Men’s Basketball Tourney. The latter is hosted by Gantry Plaza State Park on their 48th Avenue courts and will be followed on Sunday with a kids basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 1 – 12. The line-up for ‘Live at The Gantries’ was released and the Metropolitan Opera announced their summer recital at Socrates Sculpture Park will be on June 17.
